The Grave

John 12:24 Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.

In this verse is found one of the most significant truths in all of scripture. It seems counter-intuitive. Surely the path to life cannot lead through the grave. But it does. It always does.

Jesus understood this. His disciples did not. Not much has changed.

Life is still found only on the other side of death. Resurrection is experienced after the grave. Fruitfulness is found only when the seed is planted alone in the cold hard dark earth. There is no avoiding this. There is no path toward anything worthwhile that bypasses this route.

The disciples had great expectations. The tomb represented the end of all they had hoped for. Disappointment in life is often simply a matter of timing and perspective.
